The early 17th century Dutch Republic saw state portraits, such as this one by Michiel Jansz van Mierevelt, as essential for projecting authority. Prince Maurits, stadholder and military commander of the Seven United Netherlands, stands proudly in a magnificent gilded ceremonial suit of armor. His plumed helmet and gauntlets rest on a draped table, a compositional norm for official portraits since Titian established it in 1551. Despite his prominent role, Maurits refused to marry, having eight children with six mistresses and no legal successor. This oil on panel, painted circa 1613-1620, offers an imposing image suitable for a formal living space or a study.
