From the Dutch Golden Age, a period renowned for its mastery of marine painting, this powerful oil on canvas by Willem van de Velde, painted around 1675, plunges us into the chaos of the Battle of Kijkduin. It depicts the intense engagement on August 21, 1673, between the Dutch commodore Cornelis Tromp on the Gouden Leeuw and Sir Edward Spragge on the Royal Prince. The dense clouds of smoke and gunpowder fumes dramatically obscure the daylight, giving the impression of a nocturnal battle. Despite his flagship sinking, Tromp heroically continues the fight from a captured vessel. This dynamic work would command attention in a study or a room with a historical or maritime theme.
