This intimate oil on panel portrait by Andrea del Sarto hails from the vibrant Florentine High Renaissance, painted between 1525 and 1528. It was originally conceived as part of the predella-the lower section-of an altarpiece for a church in Gambassi, near Florence, depicting Domenico, one of the patrons. The artist rendered Domenico with a casual pose and a loose brushwork, creating an engaging, lifelike quality. This roundel, once paired with a portrait of Domenico's wife, Lucrezia, was integrated into a larger decorative scheme, with painted strapwork connecting individual panels. Del Sarto masterfully added highlights at the bottom to simulate the church's natural light
