The rich texture of oil paint on a wooden panel gives this early 17th-century work a distinct depth and luminosity. Otto van Veen masterfully captures the dramatic moment when Brinio, arms outstretched, stands upon a shield held aloft by his soldiers, addressing a fervent crowd. Created by Otto van Veen between 1600 and 1613, this painting was part of a series commissioned by the Dutch parliament for the Binnenhof. It depicts the Batavian revolt against the Romans in AD 69-70, a historical event often compared to the contemporary Dutch struggle for independence from Spain. Its powerful composition would command attention in a study or a historically-themed living space.
