A powerful horse dominates the foreground of this painting, pulling a long wooden pile into a construction pit, guided by a worker. George Hendrik Breitner captured this bustling Amsterdam building site around 1900, using oil on canvas to depict the city's rapid expansion. To the left, new homes are visibly under construction, while on the right, a modern steam hammer drives another pile into the ground. Breitner was deeply interested in the modern metropolis and its ongoing transformation at the turn of the 20th century
