In early 1884, Claude Monet embarked on a working visit to Bordighera, a town on the Italian Riviera, a trip initially planned for three weeks that ultimately lasted nearly three months. This oil on canvas painting, completed during that intense period, exemplifies his declared "fencing, wrestling, with the sun" to capture the brilliant Mediterranean light.
