This oil on panel painting from circa 1570 transports us to a bustling Flemish village fair, a popular subject for genre painters of the 16th century. Peeter Baltens, an artist in Pieter Bruegel's circle and a noted rhetorician-poet and actor-masterfully depicts the lively atmosphere. At the heart of the scene, a makeshift stage hosts a comic farce. The play tells the tale of a man, concealed in a pedlar's basket, who catches his wife in an adulterous act with a clergyman. Surrounding this performance, villagers engage in folk dancing and various outdoor festivities. Baltens' work provides a vivid glimpse into the social life and popular entertainment of the period
