Salvator Rosa's oil on canvas from circa 1645-1649 presents a circular scene where a coven of grotesque witches prepares for the Sabbath in broad daylight. A central hag, with flowing white hair and a broom, clutches a skull, while a companion flays a thrashing lizard to extract innards for magical unguents. An owl, a harbinger of evil, stands in for the traditional goat as a mode of transport. Other figures on the left also brandish skulls. Rosa deliberately places these violent, macabre figures under the full light of day, introducing a comic and satirical element that critiques human folly. This striking image would bring a dramatic, Baroque flair to a study or a gallery wall.
