A vast, frozen expanse comes alive in Hendrick Avercamp's Winter Landscape with Ice Skaters, an oil on panel from circa 1608. The artist's elevated perspective captures hundreds of figures bustling across the ice, engaged in activities ranging from leisurely skating and games of 'kolf' to necessary labor. A village, complete with a prominent church, anchors the scene on the left. Avercamp, an early 17th-century Dutch master, includes stark details of winter's severity, such as the carcass of a frozen horse in the left foreground, attracting crows and a dog. This intricate painting would be a compelling focal point in a traditional living room or a study.
