During the Dutch Golden Age, landscape painting, particularly of riverscapes, flourished as artists sought to depict both the grandeur of nature and the bustling life of their time. Herman Saftleven's 1654 oil on panel exemplifies this popular genre. This detailed work presents a lively scene along the Rhine near Rheineck Castle, with numerous people and boats animating the riverbank's landing area. To the left, the village of Rheineck is visible, featuring its church and figures dancing outside an inn
