Paul Cézanne's oil on fabric landscape, painted around 1895-1900, presents a vibrant surface where brushstrokes of varying hues are juxtaposed. The artist depicts the valley of the Arc River, flowing southeast of his home in Aix-en-Provence, using color to describe leaves, branches, and the stream, rather than drawing outlines of forms. Cézanne rejected the Impressionists' goal of capturing fleeting light, instead seeking balance among the forms and colors in his compositions. He rarely made preparatory sketches; the shapes on the canvas are defined by tonal contrasts and color sensation. This piece would beautifully complement a living room or study
