Executed with oil on canvas, this painting by Francesco Guardi showcases his characteristic loose brushwork, which lends a dynamic and atmospheric quality to the depiction. Created around 1783, this work captures a moment from the historic visit of Pope Pius VI Braschi to Venice, the only papal visit in the 18th century. The Doge and Senators of the Venetian Republic are shown processing towards the papal throne, where the Pope blesses the assembled government leaders. Guardi, a renowned Venetian painter of cityscapes and ceremonial life
