From the mid-19th century, Hendrik Jacobus Scholten's oil on panel painting transports us to a meticulously imagined 17th-century Amsterdam milieu. Here, Mary Henrietta Stuart, Princess of Orange and widow of Stadtholder William II, is depicted in the bustling studio of master painter Bartholomeus van der Helst. She observes her own portrait, while in the background, Van der Helst's monumental, unfinished "Banquet of the Civic Guard" hints at the recent end of the Eighty Years' War. Scholten, painting around 1850-1870, masterfully recreated this historical scene, relying on an existing Van der Helst portrait for Mary’s likeness
