On a partially ruined bridge, two central figures engage in what appears to be a tense negotiation. The man with the plumed hat, Julius Civilis, extends a hand towards the Roman commander Cerialis, while armed soldiers gather in the foreground, their gazes fixed on the exchange. This oil on panel by Otto van Veen, painted between 1600 and 1613, was part of a twelve-piece series commissioned by the Dutch parliament. It depicts the Batavian revolt against the Romans, a historical event that resonated deeply with the early Dutch Republic's own struggle for independence from Spain. This compelling scene would enhance a study or a room dedicated to historical narratives.
