The Amsterdam of the late 1910s comes to life in George Hendrik Breitner's urban landscapes, which often depict the city's canals and streets with a keen eye for everyday moments. This oil on panel, painted between 1917 and 1918, captures a quiet corner where the Lauriergracht meets the Tweede Laurierdwarsstraat. A woman carrying a child walks at the intersection, her form and those of other distant figures rendered with broad, expressive brushstrokes that evoke the cool, muted light of a typical Dutch day. It's a contemplative piece, well-suited for a living room or a hallway where its subtle charm can be appreciated.
