During the early 18th century, Istanbul was a thriving imperial capital, and artist Jean Baptiste Vanmour meticulously documented its vibrant life and ceremonies. In this oil on canvas, painted between 1720 and 1737, we witness a significant moment: the Grand Vizier's procession across the Atmeydanı, the city's vast central square. On horseback, accompanied by soldiers and preceded by two servants carrying a prayer rug and a cushion for his devotions, the Vizier makes his way. The iconic Sultan Ahmed Mosque rises majestically in the background
