A pivotal work from Caravaggio's early Roman period, this oil painting exemplifies the artist's groundbreaking approach to genre scenes. It depicts a richly attired young man, complete with a feathered hat and sword, engaging with a woman in a simple turban and white blouse. Her hand gently touches his, suggesting the act of fortune-telling, a common street encounter brought to life with unprecedented naturalism. Caravaggio (1571-1610) masterfully uses chiaroscuro to highlight the figures and their expressions, drawing the viewer into their intimate exchange. This striking piece would be an engaging focal point in a refined living room or a study.
