A dramatic nocturnal scene unfolds in this oil on canvas by Jacob Jordaens, a master of the Flemish Baroque. Torches and lanterns cast flickering light on a dense crowd of figures, their faces contorted in a mix of aggression and fear. In the foreground, a young man lies stripped and fallen, while in the mid-ground, the fateful kiss of Judas initiates Christ's arrest. Jordaens masterfully captures the chaos and tension of this pivotal moment, emphasizing the human drama through dynamic gestures and strong contrasts between light and shadow. This powerful 17th-century painting would command attention in a study or a room with a contemplative atmosphere.
