Hues of grey and white define a dramatic naval engagement, where countless sailing ships clash amidst choppy waves and rising smoke. Willem van de Velde, a master of maritime art, created this pen painting in 1657, a meticulous ink-on-canvas work resembling a detailed engraving. He had personally witnessed the Battle of Terheide in 1653, sketching from on board, and these studies informed this piece. Commissioned by the family of Dutch commander Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp, it commemorates his famous victories during the First Anglo-Dutch War. This striking artwork would command attention in a spacious living room or a study.
