Painted by Otto van Veen between 1600 and 1613, this oil on panel work was part of a prestigious commission for the Dutch parliament's Binnenhof in The Hague. It belonged to a series of twelve paintings depicting the Batavian revolt against the Romans in 69-70 AD, a historical event the nascent Dutch Republic used to draw parallels with its own struggle against Spanish rule. The dramatic night scene shows Batavian figures gathered around a fire, with the distant Roman camp of Vetera under siege, illuminated by flames and a moonlit sky. This piece, with its historical depth and dramatic composition, would enhance a study or a traditionally furnished living space.
