A dramatic contrast of light and shadow defines this powerful marine painting by Nicolaas Baur from 1818. The scene is dominated by a heavy, dark sky on the left, giving way to an intense, fiery glow on the right, where the Anglo-Dutch fleet bombards the Algerian strongholds. Explosions cast a vivid orange and yellow light across the turbulent clouds and the dark, reflective waters below, illuminating the silhouettes of numerous sailing ships. The central vessel, with its sails partially lit, stands out against the chaotic backdrop of smoke and fire. This oil on panel captures the intensity of the 1816 event led by Lord Exmouth and Vice Admiral van Capellen
