In the late 19th century, French artist Henri Fantin-Latour, celebrated for his portraits and still lifes, also explored themes drawn from music, particularly the operas of Richard Wagner. Painted in oil on canvas in 1886, this work depicts a scene from Wagner's "Tannhäuser", immersing the viewer in an ethereal vision. The titular figure, seated on the left, is cast in shadow, seemingly disengaged from the merry scene. Amidst pale bodies and soft pastel hues that evoke Venus and her court, Tannhäuser embodies the opera's central struggle between profane and sacred love. His dark tones contrast sharply with the muted colors of the visionary realm
