In the early 1880s, the banks of the Seine outside Paris offered a popular setting for artists eager to depict modern leisure and everyday life. This 1883 study by Georges Seurat captures a relaxed scene along a riverbank, where a man in a straw hat and two smaller figures sit on lush green grass. A horse stands in the shallow water, near a bather, while several small boats with figures and sails dot the calm surface of the river. The painting showcases Seurat's developing technique, with distinct dabs of color that build form and light, hinting at his later Pointillist style. Its serene subject makes it a fitting addition to a bright, informal living space.
