Henri Fantin-Latour's 1873 oil on canvas emerges from the late 19th-century Parisian art scene, a period when still life painting was undergoing subtle transformations. This particular work, exhibited at the Salon that year, features many of the same still-life elements found in his larger, more famous composition, "The Corner of a Table" (1872), which depicted young Parisian poets and writers. The scene presents a table draped in a white cloth, laden with a glass pitcher, a wine glass, a teacup, a silver sugar bowl, a decanter, and a bowl of fruit. The prominent rhododendron plant in the foreground, with its dramatic silhouette against the neutral backdrop
