This oil on wood panel by Gerard David dates from the early 1500s, originating from the bustling Flemish city of Bruges. It was originally the right half of a diptych, a two-paneled painting crafted for private devotion, with the missing left panel likely depicting the Virgin and Child. The monk, shown in prayer with hands clasped over an open book, wears the simple gray garment and tonsure of an Augustinian. Behind him, the distinctive towers of Bruges-the Onze Lieve Vrouw Church and the Cathedral of the Saviour-firmly place this serene portrait within its historical setting. Ideal for a quiet corner or a personal study.
