In the mid-18th century, portraits like this were commissioned by the European elite to project authority and prestige. Painted in 1751 by French artist Jacques-André-Joseph Aved, this oil on canvas depicts William IV, Stadtholder and Captain-General of the Dutch Republic. He is shown in full armor, adorned with the sash and star of the Order of the Garter. Despite these symbols of power, Aved's rendition captures a figure who, even with all his official regalia, does not exude the gravitas of an imposing ruler. The portrait was completed in the very year of the prince's death. This formal piece would complement a traditionally styled living room or a library.
