This painting offers a glimpse into a tranquil outdoor scene, where three men take a leisurely break. One pours from a jug, another sips from a tankard, and a third calmly smokes his pipe. Their personal belongings, including a rifle and a bag, lie nearby, suggesting a journey interrupted by this moment of repose. Adriaen van Ostade, a Dutch master from the 17th century, often depicted such unhurried country life in his works after 1670. This oil on panel from 1671 captures a prevalent habit of the era: tobacco smoking. The Dutch consumed so much tobacco, imported from the Americas where it was cultivated by enslaved people
