A stark, deep blue background sets off the figure of Jean Gros, illuminated by a focused light that highlights his expressive face and clasped hands. Rogier van der Weyden, a leading Early Netherlandish painter, created this oil on panel portrait between 1460 and 1464, using a restrained palette that emphasizes the subject's features. This work was once half of a portable diptych, intended for private devotion, with Gros's prayerful gaze originally directed towards a now-separate panel depicting Mary and the infant Jesus. As an administrator to the future Duke of Burgundy, Gros commissioned this piece to display his ambition and close ties to the Burgundian court
