A striking contrast of light and shadow defines this oil portrait by Eugène Delacroix from 1827. The child's fair skin, with its rosy cheeks, and bright blond hair are bathed in a soft glow, emerging from a rich, dark background that blends deep greens and browns. The vibrant blue of the child's garment adds a touch of pure color to the otherwise muted palette. This intimate portrayal, characteristic of French Romanticism, would lend a contemplative atmosphere to a quiet corner or a library.
