A rugged, dramatic landscape dominates this oil on canvas by Salvator Rosa, where a group of figures converges by a river under a turbulent sky. In the center, a humble fisherman holds up a large fish, presenting it to a richly dressed man who points towards the water. On the left, a small retinue of armed men observes the exchange. Painted in 1664, this Italian Baroque work illustrates a key moment from the story of Polycrates, king of Samos. Fearing his overwhelming prosperity, Polycrates cast his valuable signet ring into the sea to invite misfortune. The painting captures the miraculous return of the ring, discovered inside the fish, a sign of his continued, fated good fortune
