In 18th-century Venice, the demand for detailed urban landscapes, known as vedute, was high among British aristocrats on the Grand Tour. Bernardo Bellotto, a gifted student and nephew of the renowned Canaletto, excelled in this genre. Around 1740, Bellotto painted this oil on canvas, capturing Piazza San Marco with remarkable fidelity. The painting meticulously depicts St. Mark's Church and the Doge's Palace on the left, extending towards the lagoon. The iconic campanile stands centrally, with the Procuratie Nuove to its right. The facade of the now-demolished San Geminiano church is visible on the far right. This historical view, with its clear light and architectural detail
