Created in Amsterdam in 1664, this painting by Rembrandt van Rijn exemplifies his late period's profound psychological insight. It depicts Lucretia, the Roman noblewoman, at the tragic climax of her story, about to take her own life. Her elaborate golden gown and lustrous pearl necklace contrast sharply with her distraught expression and the small dagger she holds, conveying a moment of intense emotional conflict. Rembrandt, whose early training included a six-month stint in Amsterdam with history painter Pieter Lastman before he returned to Leiden and later settled in Amsterdam around 1632
