A cool, almost twilight palette of blues and greens defines this gouache on panel by Jacob Savery from the late 16th century, with soft, diffused light illuminating the distant, hazy mountains. The expansive mountainous landscape features a city nestled in a valley. To the left, Jephthah's daughter, with tambourines, greets her father at the city gate upon his return from battle, while Jephthah rends his clothes in despair. The background reveals a broad landscape featuring a large church and other structures along the edge of a bay. This work offers a serene, historical focal point for a study or a quiet living space.
