A sweeping mountain vista unfolds, with the snow-capped peaks of Les Dents du Midi towering over the dark expanse of Lake Geneva. In the foreground, a small, rocky promontory offers a glimpse of human presence: a shepherd resting among his goats. Gustave Courbet began this oil on fabric landscape in 1877 during his exile in Switzerland, intending it for the 1879 Paris Universal Exposition, but he died before its completion. The painting reveals his working methods, with some areas heavily built up with a palette knife
