In January 1889, during a pivotal period in Arles, Vincent van Gogh painted this oil on canvas portrait of Augustine Roulin. Known as "La Berceuse," or "The Lullaby," the artwork portrays Madame Roulin as a comforting figure, rocking a cradle. Van Gogh himself envisioned its vibrant palette as a "lullaby in colors." This particular version, one of five, was completed by the Post-Impressionist master shortly after his hospital stay and Paul Gauguin's difficult departure. The fact that Madame Roulin occupies Gauguin's chair underscores Van Gogh's attempt to fill the void left by his fellow artist. He later gifted this canvas to Gauguin as a gesture of reconciliation.
