This artwork captures a poignant moment from a beloved Japanese legend, depicting an old man kneeling with arms outstretched, desperately pleading. Above him, a beautiful young woman, Kaguyahime, accompanied by attendants, ascends towards a luminous full moon, disappearing into a hazy sky. This scene, created by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi around 1885-1892 as an ink and color on silk hanging scroll, illustrates the sorrowful farewell from "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter." The old man, who found and raised Kaguyahime from a bamboo stalk, begs her not to return to her celestial home on the Moon. The delicate rendering and ethereal atmosphere make this a contemplative piece
