This powerful oil on canvas portrait by Rembrandt van Rijn captures Johannes Wtenbogaert, a figure of significant moral authority, in Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age of 1633. Commissioned by the Remonstrant merchant Abraham Anthonisz Recht for his private residence, the painting presents Wtenbogaert with a penetrating gaze directed at the viewer. His hands are composed, one on his chest and the other holding a cloth, while an open book beside him clearly identifies him as a man of the Word. This work, renowned for its psychological depth and masterful use of light, would bring a contemplative presence to a classic library or a refined living space.
