A young woman, Europa, rides a white bull through the water, her arms raised in alarm, as two companions on the shore react with distress. To the left, a shepherd plays his pipe, seemingly unconcerned by the mythological drama unfolding. This oil on panel by David Teniers the Younger, painted between 1654 and 1656, is one of over 200 small-scale copies he created. These works served as models for the engraved illustrations in the "Theatrum Pictorium," a 1660 catalogue of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm's impressive art collection, for which Teniers also acted as curator. Its modest scale and detailed narrative make it an engaging piece for a private study or a quiet corner.
