In the Dutch Republic of the 17th century, former Catholic churches like the Mariakerk in Utrecht were repurposed for Reformed Protestant services, which meant the removal of saints' statues and paintings. Painted in 1641, Pieter Jansz Saenredam's oil on panel captures the nave and choir of this 11th-century church with remarkable precision. Saenredam meticulously rendered the preserved architectural decorations on the piers, even applying gold leaf to highlight their intricate patterns. On the left, visitors gaze at a bull image on one pillar
