From the milieu of late 19th-century France emerged Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, an artist highly regarded for his large-scale murals. This oil on fabric painting, "Summer," created in 1891, is a smaller rendition of a monumental work originally commissioned for the Hôtel de Ville in Paris. The scene depicts figures bathing and resting by a tranquil lake, embodying the "joy, happiness, rest, and the apotheosis of life" that a contemporary writer attributed to the work. Puvis de Chavannes's distinctive style, characterized by dreamlike themes and anti-naturalistic, simplified forms, had a profound impact on modernists such as Georges Seurat, Paul Gauguin
