In 1890, while residing at the Asylum of Saint-Paul in Saint-Rémy, near Arles, Vincent van Gogh dedicated himself to copying works by artists he admired. This practice freed him from original compositions, allowing him to focus on interpretation. This oil on canvas, titled "Drinkers", is his rendition of a wood engraving from Honoré Daumier’s series, a parody on the four ages of man. Van Gogh’s exaggerated figure types capture Daumier’s characteristic humor and convey a sad message about the horrors of alcoholism. The painting's greenish palette may well be an allusion to the notorious alcoholic drink
