The painting presents a dramatic bear hunt, captured in an elongated format that emphasizes the sweeping action. On the left, a hunter on horseback is grappling with a bear, while a companion swiftly moves to intervene. To the right, the chaotic struggle continues with more bears and a pack of dogs, all rendered with dynamic brushstrokes that convey intense energy and movement. This oil on wood sketch, created by Peter Paul Rubens around 1639, was one of eighteen studies for a grand series of paintings commissioned by King Philip IV for the Alcázar Palace in Madrid. Though Rubens completed this study in the final year of his life
