This painting by Wassily Kandinsky dates from 1901, a period when the artist was still creating representational landscapes before his pioneering move into abstraction. The oil on canvas portrays a lively beach scene, rendered with a distinctive, textured brushwork. Several figures dot the sandy foreground, engaged in various activities, some bending down, others standing, with what appear to be fabrics or towels drying nearby. The turquoise sea meets a distant shoreline of hills and modest structures
