The eye is immediately drawn to the tumultuous surface of the Haarlemmermeer, crowded with dozens of sailing ships locked in a fierce naval engagement. Plumes of smoke billow from cannons, and in the distance, the city of Haarlem is visible. This oil on canvas painting by Hendrick Cornelisz Vroom, created after 1629, vividly portrays the 1573 Battle on the Haarlemmermeer. During the Dutch Revolt, Haarlem was under Spanish siege, and Dutch rebels attempted to reclaim the lake, a vital supply route. They were, however, ultimately defeated by a combined fleet of Spanish and Amsterdam ships, as Amsterdam was then still loyal to Spain. Vroom, a master of marine art
