Georges Seurat's 1883 oil on panel painting showcases a luminous surface where distinct, yet airy, brushwork builds up the forms and light, giving the image a fresh, immediate quality characteristic of a study. This preparatory work for his monumental "Bathers at Asnières" depicts men and boys relaxing on the bank of the Seine River in the working-class Parisian suburb of Asnières. The figures' static gestures and composed poses evoke a mood distinct from the more dynamic scenes favored by Impressionists
