In this Neoclassical painting from 1817, Jacques-Louis David depicts Cupid and Psyche reclining on an opulent bed. Cupid, winged and seated, gazes directly at the viewer with a knowing smirk, while the beautiful mortal Psyche sleeps peacefully beside him. David's oil on canvas challenges the traditional portrayal of Cupid as an idealized youth, presenting him instead as an ungainly teenager, reflecting an exploration of physical reality versus idealized love. The artist drew inspiration from ancient texts
