How to choose the right medium for your wallpaper

Smooth, textured, self-adhesive or washable: the guide to getting it right for each room.

Samples of wallpaper finishes

When you choose a wallpaper, the design is only half the decision. The other half is the medium: the finish it's printed on. That's where the final look, the durability and how easy it is to apply are decided.

Smooth or textured finish

A smooth surface enhances detail and colour, ideal for graphic and photographic patterns. A textured finish, on the other hand, adds depth and hides small wall imperfections better: perfect for spaces with a natural feel.

Traditional or self-adhesive hanging

The paste-up version offers the best look and long-term stability, suited to those decorating a home they own. Repositionable self-adhesive is the choice for renters or anyone who likes to change often: you apply it yourself and remove it without a trace.

Damp rooms

For kitchen and bathroom, favour finishes designed to withstand steam and frequent cleaning. A paper suited to these spaces keeps its colour and grip even where humidity is highest.

Practical advice: start from the room and your lifestyle, then choose the medium and finally the design. In this order it's much harder to go wrong.
