Peel-and-stick wallpaper: how to install it without damaging the wall

A practical step-by-step guide to applying and removing peel-and-stick wallpaper without damage.

Applying peel-and-stick wallpaper

Peel-and-stick wallpaper has put hanging within everyone's reach: no glue, no special tools. But for a clean result — and to remove it without leaving marks — it pays to work methodically.

Prepare the wall

The surface must be clean, dry and smooth. Wipe it with a damp cloth, let it dry well and check there's no dust or grease: the adhesive only sticks to a sound surface.

Start from the top, little by little

Peel off only the first few centimetres of film and align the drop with a level or the ceiling edge. Work down gradually, smoothing from top to bottom and from the centre outwards to push the air out.

Bubbles are not a problem

If a bubble remains, gently lift the drop and lay it back down, or push the air towards the edge with a soft smoother. Peel-and-stick wallpaper is repositionable: you have all the time you need to fix it.

Removing it without damage

When you want to change it, pull slowly from a corner at a low angle, keeping the tension constant. On freshly painted walls, wait a few weeks before applying so the paint is fully cured.
