Rich, warm colors dominate this 1687 oil on canvas by Michiel van Musscher, particularly deep reds and browns, set against a darker, subdued background. The light source, seemingly from the left, illuminates the central figures and the intricate details of the Persian carpet and the open map. The painting portrays Thomas Hees, a Dutch diplomat, with his nephews Jan and Andries. Crucially, behind Hees stands his enslaved servant, also named Thomas, a 17-year-old African youth depicted shoeless with an iron collar, a poignant reference to his bondage. The map on the table highlights Hees's diplomatic missions in Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli
