This painting by Johann Christian Vollerdt, from the mid-18th century, captures a specific moment in the diplomatic circles of Istanbul. It depicts the Belgrade Forest, north of the city, featuring the impressive Ottoman water reservoirs known as the Bends. Originally a work by Jean-Baptiste Vanmour, this oil on canvas was commissioned as a copy by the Dutch envoy Cornelis Calkoen to evaluate Vollerdt's skill in Dresden. The scene, with its lush hills and the man-made dam, offers a serene view, ideal for a study or a quietly elegant living room.
